Cannes Film Festival 2012 Fashion

Ah the Cannes Film Festival. This festival launched last Wednesday, 16 May, and runs till 27 May 2012 and gives the movie world a preview as to what the next critically acclaimed films are that could be possibilities for next year’s Oscars. There are a lot of indie flicks too, that get exposure there but perhaps may not take off in the mainstream. It is generally considered at the top of the film festival circuit, in the same way the Oscars is at the top of the award ceremony circuit.

So we get some great fashion. There are a lot of photocalls which, as far as I can tell (I am not a film festival expert so you can correct me if I am wrong on any of this!) consists of photoshoots of cast members for certain films, shot outside – usually on the beautiful waterfront – and in the daytime, so the outfits tend to be more daytime. Then there are the big red carpets for movie premieres, and the opening and closing ceremonies for the festival itself, which is where we get the gowns.

I will probably do another fashion post for Cannes as it is still going on for another five days.

Here are some of my top picks so far:

Diane Kruger in a burgundy Versus dress and Jimmy Choo shoes, at the photocall for Cannes’ jury, which Kruger is a part of this year. Despite the fact that she looks too thin to me – seems she lost some weight leading up to this festival – I love the shape of this cocktail dress. Super flattering how it draws in around the waist.

Later on, at the red carpet premiere for the movie Moonrise Kingdom, she wore a beautiful Giambattista Valli dress:

Again with Diane Kruger in glittery Vivienne Westwood at the premiere for Amour.

Next was Eva Longoria in Marchesa – no idea why she was at the event, except that she is a L’Oreal rep and from what I could gather online, they had something to do with the premiere???

Same goes for Freida Pinto, below, who also isn’t in the movie but is a L’Oreal rep. But regardless, Freida looked amazing in a Michael Angel dress. I just love the print on top, and in my eyes Freida rarely does wrong with her style (although, if I was to be picky, I’m not a big fan of her shoes).

Freida Pinto again wowed at a photocall for Desert Dancer in Salvatore Ferragamo.

I included this Eva Herzigova shot because I just thought her Dolce & Gabbana gown was breathtaking. I love the colour and the fit. You can also see a lot of work went into it – it looks stunning!

My favourite Jessica Chastain turned up in Alexander McQueen, who made her look so phenomenal at the Oscars that she won my best dressed vote. I sadly don’t think this dress did as much for her, but I still appreciate it on her. I love when a redhead wears pink or red, it’s such an unexpected surprise!

Salma Hayek hits up the Madagascar 3 premiere in Gucci.

Jada Pinkett Smith showed off a Versace dress at the photocall for Madagascar 3.

QUESTION:

  • These are only some of the looks to come out of Cannes so far, of course. What’s your favourite?

Comments

  4. Sam @ Fit for my Fork says:

I love Diane Kruger, and her cocktail dress at the top is really nice. I agree though, it looks like she’s lost quite a lot of weight – or maybe it’s just the way the dress pulls in?

  5. I love all the dresses. So gorgeous! Love Eva’s train.

  6. I love Diane Kruger- she is always perfection. Classy but with an edge. Girl Crush!

  7. I always love Eva 🙂 She’s such a cutie I think!

  8. Eva is always a favorite of mine! She consistently rocks a fabulous look 🙂
