One Lovely Blog Award

The oh-so-kind and sweet Lauren at Oatmeal with a Fork recently honoured me with the One Lovely Blog Award.

It is an award bestowed by fellow bloggers, and when received you are to list 7 random facts about you and then name 7 bloggers you want to pass the award onto.

So here goes nothing…

  • I will always be happy when an MC Hammer song comes on the radio.

I loved his songs growing up – dancing to them was one of my favourite hobbies! So I always smile when U Can’t Touch This comes on the radio unexpectedly.

  • I drive barefoot whenever possible.

I don’t feel I drive as well in shoes as I do barefoot. I am always convinced my shoe will slip off the pedal or something. Back home this is easy as we basically exist in flip flops, so I just slide them off, but I’ve had to come to terms with driving in shoes when I’m in big ol’ winter boots or sneakers up here.

  • I eat left-handed, and am weirdly ambidextrous in some ways.

I write right-handed, and am right-handed, but have always found it comfortable to eat left-handed. When I snowboard, I can do either goofy (right foot forward) or regular (left foot forward). I prefer to wear my watch the left-handed way, on my right wrist. I say it’s because my sister, who’s 6 years older than me, is left-handed, so I grew up watching her eat and wanted to emulate her – who knows??

  • I used to be a picky eater.

I was the pickiest eater growing up. I only snapped out of it because I hit the age of 14 and started getting embarrassed when I would go to a friend’s house for dinner and want only plain pasta with plain tomato sauce (no bits! no chunks!). I forced myself to start eating something I didn’t like, and try it at least 3 times before deciding if I liked it or not. In the end, I got over it and became a complete foodie! It was mainly textures that threw me off – the seeds on a strawberry or the fibrous sac of orange segments. But I got over it, so parents – if your kids are picky eaters, there’s hope!

(Note: However, even though I LOVE veggies, I still can’t stand the watery ones like eggplant, zucchini and peppers, and I love mushy textures like muffins broken up in milk and eaten with a spoon, and cereal left standing until it’s soggy and then enjoyed. So I still have some definite weird eating habits. But I’ll try anything once (well, unless it’s meat of course!)

  • My aunt is a published author and one of my greatest inspirations for my writing career.

She’s the best and always helps me out with advice, tips and feedback. She can write anything, but has published many books in the historical fiction field for young adults, and they are great reads. I love Viking Girl (now on Kindle for just $2.99! = shameless family plug :).)

  • My issues with reacting to sugar are fairly recent.

I really only developed issues with sugar once I hit college age. Growing up, my absolute favourite dessert was an English dessert called sticky toffee pudding (pictured above). My aunty Pauline made the best sticky toffee pudding and I would go nuts for it. I still want to try to recreate it using brown rice syrup or some kind of syrup that doesn’t elevate my blood sugar levels as much!

  • I play the clarinet and piano.

I don’t know if it’s fair to say play in the present tense, as I haven’t practiced in a long time, but I completed all my grades on the clarinet and played in the Cayman National Orchestra for a couple of years when in high school. I stopped taking exams on the piano at an earlier point, but I still love to play. My dream is to one day own a house that has a bay window with a baby grand piano in front of it (kinda like the one pictured, but without all the fussy decor!).

Passing the buck…

Now it’s my turn to pass this lovely award onto seven very deserving bloggers! I can’t wait to read your seven random facts, guys!

QUESTION:

  • Leave one random fact about you – go!

Comments

  1. Sending you a big hug, lovely girl! Congratulations on your blog award and thank you for the shameless family plug, which I think you call a ‘shout out’ on your side of the pond! xoxo

  2. ok i don’t know if you have talked about why you stay away from sugar, but i would love to hear more about it (if you want to share…). have you done a blog post about it before?

    • Good question. I haven’t done a whole post per se, but I feel like I mention it a lot so I never bothered doing one. Having said that, looking through my blog history I can’t find where I HAVE mentioned it lol. I know I write about it when I do guest posts for others, but I should do a post for the blog itself!

Quickly, I can say that I just react very poorly to sugar, both physically and mentally. My heart races and my thoughts start going really quick, I talk faster, I get super hyped up energy and then I get a huge crash. Later on I can get stomachaches, I can become moody, and if I continue to have sugar for a few days I start craving it more and more and getting grouchy without it. Lol. Fun stuff!

      • How interesting, I began to have issues with sugar a few years ago. Would love to hear your story about it! If you like, read my blog about raw chocolate, sugar and milk. Would be great to hear what you think about it.

        Love
        Anna

      • Interesting – thanks for the link, I’ll check it out!

  3. Love that you love mc hammer, haha! Brings me back to the good old hammer days, lol!

    Happy Thursday! ❤

  4. Emily Butler says:

Aw thanks! Those are some interesting facts too, especially the sugar, have you tried coconut palm sugar yet for baking? That’s what I use sometimes! I really like it!

    • Yes I love coconut sugar! It gives things that brown sugar taste so it’s excellent in chocolate chip cookies! I have a great cookie recipe up here that uses it – sooo good for fulfilling that craving!

  5. Eeeeeeek!!!!!! Thank you so, so much!!!! I greatly appreciate it! I will fulfill my duties as soon as I get home from work. Also, we are *so similar* it’s scary! I bust a move every time MC Hammer comes on, I eat left handed but am right handed, I used to play the violin, I was picky as a kid and am weird about textures, and I always drive barefoot too!!!!! Like seriously… Are we the same person?!?

  6. I love these little surveys. I used to be a super picky eater as well when I was younger, like so intense. I would only ever eat pasta with butter, bananas, and yogurt. That’s it. My poor parents haha. I’ve always had bad reactions to sugar in the form of getting panic and anxiety and also skin reactions, but only really cut it out the past 3 years

    • But see how all us picky eaters turned out! Now we’re total foodies lol. So something must be going right :). Glad you were able to identify that sugar was at the root of your problems and cut it out!

  7. I always drive barefoot, too! I think it’s for the same reason as you. I love reading these types of posts 🙂

  8. Aw! Thank you so much for passing this on to me! I can’t wait to do a post on my blog. You are too sweet.
And I swear, we may be twins. I always drive barefoot, used to be extremely picky, grew up playing the clarinet and the piano, AND am oddly ambidextrous in a lot of ways. I felt like I was reading about myself in this post! Too funny. (:

  9. you drive barefoot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!? hahahahahaha you make me smile 🙂

  10. LOVE MC Hammer.. and I so would rather drive barefooted. I don’t know what it is about it, but I definitely think it makes me drive better as well!! It’s almost like were the same person 🙂
–Hmm something random.. I chew almost a pack a gum a day. I’m rather addicted!

    • That is so freaky! So glad I have all my fellow barefoot drivers to back me up ;). And yep, that’s a lot of gum. Haha. When I remember to buy gum I chew it a lot, but then the pack runs out and I just forget to get more, doh!
